Unlike the common 34mm Oyster case, the Ref. 6424 features a slightly larger 36mm case.
Collectors refer to it as the "Big Oyster," and with its exquisite case size and refined face, this model possesses a unique presence that is neither a sports model nor a dress model. We are simultaneously introducing two models, one silver and one black.
The greatest charm of the Ref. 6424 is undoubtedly its dial, which gives the impression of being expansive and pressing forward, combined with an unexpectedly comfortable fit on the wrist that belies this impression, thanks to its modest thickness.
Beyond its 36mm size, the narrow bezel and large dial give it an impact greater than its actual case size. Despite this strong presence, the face is refined and lacks the pomp of a sports model, contributing to its unique character that blends seamlessly into any situation.
The modest thickness of the case is due to the hand-wound Cal. 1210 movement. Its un-Oyster-like fit means it won't get in the way of your cuffs.
Both models share vintage Rolex details such as the single "SWISS" inscription, sharp, pointed alpha hands, and wedge-shaped indexes.
Of the two, the black dial is clearly a beautiful mirror finish at first glance, and under sunlight, the tropicalization is clearly visible.
The Ref. 6424, while the same size as the Ref. 1016 Explorer 1, remains an Oyster. The striking contrast of a tropical dial on this somewhat understated model is so compelling that it makes one feel that with just this and a Daytona, one could be content.
The silver dial, like all Rolex watches handled by AFTER, is one whose condition and details are impeccable. Furthermore, what we really want to draw attention to is that it comes with the original rivet bracelet and end links for the Ref. 6424.
The Ref. 6424, with its larger case size, has a bracelet width of 20mm, similar to sports models. For this reason, bracelets are often swapped with those of sports models, and specimens with their original bracelet and end links are becoming increasingly rare.
Even without ostentatious features, the silver dial boasts impeccable specifications in every respect, making it a piece we would highly recommend as a first Rolex.
As indicated by the "75" and "7206" engravings, both watches come with their original end links and bracelets. Unusually for models of this era, the lugs do not have drilled holes, so the bracelet has slits on the back for removal.
Whether it's the black dial, whose tropicalization creates a striking contrast, or the silver dial, which, despite its impeccable specifications, somehow exudes an air of understanding, this unique presence, neither sports model nor dress model, is precisely why the Ref. 6424 stands out.
The Ref. 6424 itself, let alone tropical dials and original bracelets, is becoming increasingly difficult to find these days.
It goes without saying that the opportunity to see two such pieces together is extremely rare. Whether it's the ultimate watch for your collection or a reliable first step into vintage Rolex, please come and see them in store.
