Classics from Patek Philippe: Ref. 3919 / Ref. 3748

The Calatrava and Golden Ellipse are known as classic dress models from Patek Philippe. The Calatrava was launched in 1932, reflecting the austere atmosphere of the post-Great Depression era, appearing with a modest and simple design. Its sophisticated design, clearly influenced by Bauhaus, continues to captivate collectors as the pinnacle of classic dress watches to this day.

The Golden Ellipse, released later in 1968, features a highly innovative case that is neither round nor rectangular. Designed based on the golden ratio of 1:1.618, the case exhibits perfect proportions that merge modern design with mathematical aesthetics. Despite the dial having almost no decorative elements, its unique presence makes it instantly recognizable.

The models we are introducing in this journal are even more special, featuring unique bracelets. Both the Calatrava and Golden Ellipse were largely offered with leather straps. However, some of them had bracelets made of the same material as the case, representing the most luxurious variation.

(Top) A breathtakingly impressive bracelet.
(Bottom) Contemporary pamphlets show that there was a wide variety of variations for each model.

For both of these watches, the main appeal is their bracelets. Beyond their stunning appearance and overwhelming presence, these intricately crafted bracelets flex flexibly, conforming to the wrist as if adhering to the skin, offering a wearing comfort that is on par with, if not superior to, leather straps.

In both models, the bracelets are attached directly to the case without using lugs. At first glance, this design might seem overly bold, but it also elevates the watch and bracelet into a more integrated piece of jewelry, wouldn't you agree?

Furthermore, it is known that these bracelets, which are clearly very labor-intensive to produce, had several other variations besides those we are introducing. The approach of offering a rich variety even in labor-intensive specifications is precisely what you would expect from a top-tier brand with top-tier clients. This is a luxurious approach that would be unthinkable for a practical watch brand like Rolex.

(Bottom) The buckle also boasts high functionality; with a double lock, there's no worry of it coming undone while worn, and it also has a mechanism that allows for fine adjustment in three stages.

Just as voluminous precious metal accessories have become a standard in the fashion world, isn't it time for something similar to be sought after in the watch world?

Indeed, just as with the resurgence of Rolex's bubble backs, or even Cartier's Tanks, the demand for combining vintage watches with highly original and decorative bracelets is steadily increasing.

The combination of classic models from top-tier brands and bracelets crafted under an uncompromising idealism makes one's imagination run wild, wondering what kind of individuals wore them when they were first sold.

It's safe to say that a watch that is first-class in every aspect and completely uncompromising transcends the boundaries of a mere timepiece, offering unparalleled satisfaction as something to be worn. Please come and see it in person at the store, and experience its overwhelming presence.
