Ref.1016 Matte Dial Mark 1 Fat Font
The Ref. 1016 was manufactured for 30 years, undergoing various minor changes. What we are introducing today is an early Mk1 model, produced from 1967, featuring a matte dial. Its most distinctive characteristic is the "Frog Foot" Rolex crown mark, which spreads wide like a frog's foot.
Furthermore, among these Mk1 models, there are some with serial numbers starting with 17- that have particularly thick luminous material on the 3, 6, and 9 markers. These models, known as "fat font," are rare; perhaps only one appears for every ten Mk1s. They are not something you can easily acquire by simply looking for them; you need to patiently wait for one to become available.
The 3, 6, and 9 numerals on the Ref. 1016 already have an appealing look, but they become even more so when the luminous material is applied thickly like this. There aren't many "cute" details in the tough world of vintage Rolex. Although it's a subtle difference, it has always been highly popular among collectors, and those who appreciate it will recognize it instantly.
In those days, when all dials were handmade, it's possible that for a certain period, there was a craftsman who applied particularly generous amounts of luminous material. It's a vintage piece that truly sparks the imagination.
