AFTER has handled many vintage Rolex watches, such as Datejust and Air-King. Replacing the sports models that led past booms, they are becoming a new staple due to their comfortable fit on the wrist and rich dial variations.

This time, we received particularly interesting Air-King models. The hands and indexes vary, and all of them came from the British market, which is known for having many interesting pieces, with production dating back to around 1965.

These three watches feature a 34mm case size that fits snugly on the wrist, and despite their basic impression with white dials, their distinctly different details catch the eye.

(Top) The only one of the three without luminescence, an All Arabic dial.
(Bottom) The triangular indexes, which might seem abrupt, are truly unique to vintage watches.

First, we introduce the All Arabic dial. Many people will find this dial, which looks very much like a classic timepiece, un-Rolex-like in a good way. That impression is not mistaken, as all-Arabic numeral dials are actually quite rare for Rolex.

The soft-looking, understated dial is a perfect match for the Air-King. The non-luminous alpha hands provide a subtle accent to the dial.

The second one is a watch with triangular indexes. The triangles arranged around the outer edge of the dial, almost perfectly equilateral, look more like studs than indexes. Their sharpness, shining within the familiar 34mm case, is striking.

Guilloché, synonymous with luxury watches. The contrast of it being used in a practical Rolex is something you only find in vintage models. The bracelet comes with an extension.

The most special of them all is the third one, the Honeycomb or Guilloché dial. In vintage Rolex watches, whether Datejust or Explorer, guilloché is one of the most sought-after features. And it might not be widely known that guilloché dials exist for the Air-King.

Even with a modest model like the Air-King, the dial alone is truly special. This balanced sense of contrast was absent in previous booms. It's one of those very clever points of appeal that can only be appreciated by looking at Rolex now.

While the details and prices vary among the three, their excellent usability and high satisfaction are common traits. These are typical AFTER suggestions: not ostentatious, yet irresistibly eye-catching.
