Ref.6466 Oyster Date

We received an interesting piece from England. This is a full set Ref.6466 with an Arabic guarantee. This "Oysterdate" model, which does not bear the name "Perpetual," is a small boys' size at 31mm, making it feel like it offers a variety of ways to enjoy it.

As the Arabic guarantee indicates, this particular watch was sold in the Middle East, resulting in a distinct tropical dial that suggests prolonged exposure to strong ultraviolet rays.

Peeking out from that special dial is a calendar with alternating red and black date displays. This is one of those extremely rare details that would normally have been replaced with all-black numerals during an overhaul.

(Top) A full set, complete with Arabic papers and guarantee, plus original tags and box.
(Bottom) The unmistakable red-letter calendar is an excellent match for the tropical dial and yellow gold indices. The original alpha hands and single SWISS marking are also as they were back then.

The bracelet is made by WAB, one of Rolex's suppliers at the time. The WAB mark is located where the Rolex crown mark would normally be, a rare feature found only on WAB-made bracelets and not on those from other suppliers.

A piece sold for the Middle Eastern market, with an unmistakable English-made bracelet. While coincidental, it's a combination that brings to mind the historical context of the time when Britain wielded strong influence in the Middle East.

Furthermore, this bracelet has straight ends. With a slight gap between the lugs and the wrist, it gives a unique impression of the watch head floating, rather than the entire watch appearing as one continuous piece with the bracelet.

Despite its small size, it has a substantial thickness, so when worn, it surprisingly fits the wrist very well. Coupled with the vintage-style rivet bracelet, it gives the impression of a charming accessory.

A distinct tropical dial with original alpha hands, a red and black calendar disk, a WAB-made rivet bracelet, and most importantly, an Arabic guarantee.

While this Ref.6466 has many charms, its boys' size puts it in a very difficult position. Indeed, generally speaking, a watch of this size may not suit everyone immediately upon wearing it.

However, precisely because of its exquisite size, it may be possible to approach it more casually, perhaps like a Cartier Tank, as a clever accessory rather than a wristwatch.

And it is the contrast between this supposedly casual accessory and its tropical dial revealing red date indicators that will quietly assert an immeasurable sense of style.

Since the size isn't for everyone, the price isn't overly high. Please consider it as an exceptionally tricky playful piece for vintage lovers, or as a first Rolex that you're unlikely to see on anyone else.
